Welcome
Thank you for visiting the Sumter County Sheriff's Office website.
Sumter County was created by the Florida legislature on January 8, 1853 and was once part of Marion County. Known for its simple beauty, much of what is now eastern Sumter County was part of the original Seminole Indian reservation established under the Treaty of Moultrie in 1824, and was named after Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter. Today, the county is one of the fastest growing counties in Florida, encompasses 574 square miles, and is home to more than 95,000.
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office is founded on the principles of integrity, respect, honesty, and caring for others. With a staff of 257 dedicated men and women, we are committed to providing professional law enforcement services through a well-trained staff, technology, crime prevention and a results-oriented, proactive approach to public safety. In 2010, the FBI Uniform Crime Report showed that Sumter County was one of the safest counties in Florida; a result that we all can be proud of.
We care about our community. We are continuously seeking out opportunities to partner with the public and to maintain an open dialogue with those we serve. By doing so, together, we make Sumter County a great place to live, work and play. I hope you find the information on this site helpful and thank you for allowing us to serve you.
