Cold Case Files

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office remains committed to the families of homicide victims in bringing those responsible for these acts to justice. It is based on that commitment that this Cold Case page is presented to you as we ask for your assistance. Frequently cases are solved due to a citizen coming forward and providing that vital piece of evidence which had been previously unknown to authorities. No matter how small or insignificant you feel your information might seem, please provide it to the Cold Case Unit.

All information provided to the Unit is assessed as a part of the bigger picture or entire puzzle. Many times there is only one missing piece needed to bring a case to justice. Your assistance could make the difference in bringing justice and closure to a victim and their family.

Marilyn Elizabeth McKenzia1976-0651

On July 27, 1976, at approximately 10:12AM, the skeletal remains of 17 year old Marilyn Elizabeth McKenzia were discovered in a wooded lot off of Jackson Street in Wildwood, Florida. She was possibly last seen in the Wildwood area getting into a 1970's model blue and white Buick Electra 225 with two unknown black males. McKenzia had left Pennsylvania in November of 1975 to pick apples and later traveled with the seasonal farm laborers picking watermelons between Immokalee, Florida and Wildwood, Florida. Marilyn McKenzia's cause of death was determined to be a homicide and it is suspected that she was physically beaten just prior to her death. It was estimated that McKenzia had been killed approximately two months prior to the discovery of her body.
