Detention Support Specialist

PAY RATE: $11.75/HR

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The objective of this job is to assist Court Officers by performing support functions associated with the care of inmates. It involves some typing, filing, and other clerical functions. It also involves manning electronically operated control positions to assure the authorized movement of person(s) throughout the facility. Requires successful completion of Orientation/Training Course.

A. Abide by the “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics”.
B. Answer and place calls at switchboard.
C. Answer questions from the public in a courteous and efficient manner.
D. Take messages for employees, and distribute as necessary.
E. Perform warrant check, as necessary (Upon limited access certification with NCIC/FCIC).
F. Assist in booking arrestees by typing, computer entry, filing paperwork, and other clerical duties.
G. Enter new inmate information into the computer.
H. Type miscellaneous reports and forms.
I. Prepare paperwork, as required, for inmate release.
J. Assist with paperwork in closing out shifts, such as daily head-counts, court transmittals, and other daily filings.
K. Man control rooms, as required, by operating control panels, observing Doors and controls performing control panel tests, and other required duties according to specific post orders.
L. Observe Court Officer as he or she enters into the court area. Radio for assistance as needed.
M. Observe visitors in the court areas and alert Court Officers to any problems or rule violations.
N. Be alert for conditions or situations which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency or the Corrections Division, and make recommendations for Solutions.
O. Perform any other duties that may be required by the Jail Administrator or through necessity of situations.

High school diploma or GED.
Must possess a Florida Driver's License.
Ability to follow instructions and organize own work.
Applicant must meet all the qualifications and requirements of a Detention Support Specialist (DSS).
Applicant must be able to complete the DSS training program.
Ability to understand and follow English language instructions, both verbal and written.
Ability to use general office machines such as copier and computer.
Ability to work harmoniously with the public and office personnel.
Possess normal sight and hearing, and physical agility required for standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
Cleared by a 10 panel drug test.
Have an acceptable background investigation and driving record.

Work in a detention facility or courthouse. Will not have direct control or supervision of inmates, but work in proximity of inmates. May be subjected to or within hearing range of verbal abuse by inmates. Possibility of physical abuse is possible. May be required to work shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays. During some shifts, may be required to spend the entire shift in a locked control room. May be required to work overtime when necessary.
